NEWS: 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1' Earns Estimated $17 Million From Thursday Night Premiere Showings in the United States
Box Office Mojo is reporting that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 has earned an estimated $17 million in the United States from Thursday night showings, which include the 8 p.m. premiere screenings and later.
While this is still quite an impressive Thursday night (or midnight) premiere gross, it is much lower in comparison to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire's $25 million Thursday night intake last year and The Hunger Games' $19.7 million midnight premiere earnings in 2012. Basing on this Thursday night gross, Box Office Mojo analysts are also now skeptical if The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will even hit the $150 million mark, as early predictions initially stated. Both The Hunger Games and Catching Fire reached this goal, earning $152.5 million and $158.1 million, respectively.
Moreover, analysts are now predicting that if the film follows the same pattern as Catching Fire, which was released around the same time of the year last year, it might end the weekend with only $109 million, a significant drop from the early box-office forecast.
This lower earnings might have been due to the film not being shown in IMAX, something that the first two films had. If you recall, The Hunger Games, while was not shot with IMAX cameras, was shown in IMAX in select theaters in 2012.
If the latest installment succeeds in surpassing this mark however, The Hunger Games franchise will be the first franchise in history to have the first three installments earn more than $150 million on their opening weekends in North America. In addition, even if Mockingjay Part 1 doesn't hit the mark, the film will still easily be the biggest opening of 2014 so far.
