OFFICIAL: 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1' Surges Past 'Guardians of the Galaxy' To Become The Highest Grossing Film of 2014!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is now officially the #1 Highest Grossing Film of 2014 in the Domestic Box-office, beating Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy! As of the writing, Mockingjay Part 1 has earned a total of $333,180,638 in the domestic box-office, surging past Guardians' lifetime domestic gross total of $333,172,112 by just under $8k on Wednesday (via BoxOfficeMojo.com). This is a groundbreaking feat for the penultimate installment in The Hunger Games film series, considering the lack of 3D and IMAX formats of the film in the United States which could have further augmented its box-office earnings (the first two films were both released in IMAX formats).

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the second film in The Hunger Games franchise, also obtained this similar title in 2013 - as the Highest Grossing Film of the Year.

In addition, Mockingjay Part 1 currently sits at #7 for the year in the worldwide box-office totals, having earned a whopping total of $711,880,638. The film is also still yet to be released in Japan and China (in 3D), two markets where analysts are expecting the film to rack up more huge box-office earnings from.
